These are the questions that David Platt is asking in his new book Radical: Taking Back Your Faith from the American Dream.

Radical is an eye-opening look into what it really means to be a disciple of Christ. Whether or not you are a Christian, you are probably familiar with the Ten Commandments. One of these Commandments says that we should never put any idols before God in our lives.. Idol worship is a sin that replaces God with other meaningless elements of our everyday life.

Platt attacks the notion that the American dream has replaced seeking God as our number one goal in life. He insists that the American dream has become the ultimate idol for our generation and that this focus destroys our relationship with God..

For example, he states that we are constantly allowing ourselves to dilute the true meaning of being a Christian because to fully follow Christ, we must be willing to give up anything and everything at any point in our lives..

Platt introduces a theory where we have created an “American Jesus;” that allows us to indulge in the American dream while calling ourselves Christians.

To show what it truly means to be a follower of Christ, David often refers to the Bible, including Luke 9, in which Jesus requires his disciples to give up everything for Him..

At times, Platt may seem a little harsh, but a deeper reflection will reveal that there is startling truth in his words. Platt does not ignore the fact that full obedience to Christ can be hard and not always enjoyable. David mentions that this kind of dedication is required to truly follow Jesus.
