Popular Gifts For Mothers Day US

When Anna Jarvis began Mothers Day US, it was to honor her mother who had died a few years before. Anna began to campaign to have a holiday set aside to honor all mothers. It was supposed to be a day for children to honor and show their appreciation to their mothers for all that they had done for them. Most children would give Mother’s Day gifts that reflected how they felt. However, the holiday has now become what is called a “Hallmark Holiday.” A lot of the true meaning of what a mother means has been lost in the need to purchase a card, flowers or any kind of gift to give to mom without much thought being put into it.

While Hallmark cards for Mothers Day US do make a huge profit, florists and other companies that also provide flowers do a brisk business in the shipping or sale of Mothers Day flowers. Grocery stores even make a good profit, as adult children rush in to purchase bundles of flowers to take to their mother. Roses of course are popular, and most mothers do love to receive flowers, but when little thought is put into the purchase, it isn’t honoring your mother as the holiday was meant to do.

The other major gift seen on Mother’s Day in the US tends to be chocolates. There are always promotions and other deals on special packages of chocolates that are put together specifically for this day. A Mothers Day gift for a mom with a sweet tooth will almost always be some form of chocolate. Some specialty shops will do a huge amount of business leading up to this day, usually more than any other day of the year with the possible exception of Valentine’s Day.

Many families will celebrate Mother’s Day in the US by taking their mother out for breakfast, brunch or dinner. Even in this day and age the mother in the family tends to be the one responsible for making meals on a regular basis, and so families try to make Mothers Day special by taking their mom out to dine in a fancy restaurant. The second Sunday in May is the biggest day of the year for most restaurants, and most will schedule extra workers to deal with the high volume of patrons.

All of these gifts on Mothers Day US will probably be appreciated, though in many cases the day begins and ends with the gift. Whether the gifts for mom are flowers, chocolates or a night out at a nice restaurant, it will show that the person giving the gift cares, but it might not have the same impact as a more personal gift. This is the commercialization of the holiday and it will mean different things for different people.

Mothers Day UK Traditions

It is quite common for Americans to assume that all the holidays they celebrate are the same in every country. Mothers Day UK isn’t the same as the Mother’s Day in the United States or in Canada. In Canada the same day is celebrated as the American Mother’s Day, yet in some churches in Canada, Mothering Sunday is still observed. Knowing the history of Mother’s Day and Mothering Sunday is useful to understanding why the US and the UK celebrate different dates.

Mothers Day UK is celebrated on the fourth Sunday of the church calendar of the season of Lent. Lent is the time when Christians prepare for baptism, or those who have been baptized reflect upon their lives and try to either give up something that is bad for them or spend time in prayer. The question, “When is Mothering Sunday?” is the same as “When is Mother’s Day in the UK?” Since the date for Easter always changes from year to year, the dates for Lent and thus Mother’s Day in the UK will also always be different.

There are some traditions with Mother’s Day in the UK that tend to be quite specific. Flowers for mothers are given out frequently, just as in North America, and the top choices tend to be roses followed by chrysanthemums and carnations. Sweets are also popular gifts and many children will take the time to bake an almond cake that is very rich for their mothers. This kind of cake is often called a Mothering cake in honor of the person who receives it.

Mother’s Day in the UK has also become very commercialized, just as in America. The idea of respecting and honoring one’s mother for the sacrifices and efforts that they have made on their children’s behalf is still an ideal, but the reality tends to come down to a store-bought gift. Mother’s Day cards are purchased rather than made, and flowers are an easy purchase as well, yet it is still the aim of most to make Mothers Day special.

So Mothers Day UK does have some differences from other countries, but ultimately it is quite similar. Aside from the date it occurs and a few specific traditions, it is hard to see any real difference between this when this holiday is celebrated in the UK, and when it is celebrated in America. Mother’s Day gifts will still be purchased and given, regardless of the country, and hopefully the children will take the time to remember what their mothers have done on their behalf.

History Of First Mothers Day

While there were festivals in ancient times in Greece to honor the mother of the gods, the first Mothers Day occurred in the early 1900s in the United States. A woman named Anna Jarvis wanted to honor her own mother, and campaigned hard to have a national day to honor and bring a happy Mother’s Day to all mothers.

Anna Jarvis created the first Mother’s Day as a way to honor her mother’s memory. Her mother passed away and two years later Jarvis began a campaign to make the second Sunday in May a day of recognition for all mothers. Her Mother’s Day ideas spread over the years and soon much of America was celebrating this holiday. Jarvis went from Philadelphia to the surrounding states and then beyond, convincing others to celebrate this day with her.

So the first Mother’s Day is sometimes considered to be in 1907, when Jarvis began her campaign. For different states the first day might be a year or so later, depending on when it was brought into custom and law. The history of Mothers Day made its official starting point, however, in 1914. This was the year when the president at the time, Woodrow Wilson, made this day into a national holiday for all states to celebrate.

After the first Mothers Day was recognized by the United States, Anna Jarvis became upset about its commercialism. It didn’t take long for stores to make money off of this holiday by selling flowers for mothers, cards and candy. Anna Jarvis spent the rest of her life trying to fix what she’d started. She felt that greed and profit were taking over from what started as a simple way to remember her own mother and for others to do the same.

The first Mothers Day launched what was to become one of the most important holidays for a number of different industries, and the amount of money that is spent on the second Sunday in May across the nation is huge. Yes, the holiday was initially created in order to honor the sacrifices made and hard work done by mothers everywhere, and yes it has become commercialized. Yet it is still a wonderful day set aside to honor our mothers and millions of loving and grateful children do just that.
