History Preserved In Saffron Walden – Essex

There is an old world charm to Saffron Walden, Essex that you cannot miss as soon as you see it. It is the essence of English history right before your eyes. You can look around, and the world appears almost as it did generations ago. It is a wonderful way to relax and unwind.

Located approximately 45 miles from London, and just 15 miles from Cambridge, the town is rural with around 15,000 residents. It has been having market days since 1141, and still carries on this tradition today. The market stalls provide an array of different items to peak the interests of any shopper. The town is named for the saffron crocus, a plant once noted for its medicinal qualities.

The attractions are many and varied in Saffron. Most obvious are the buildings which have been expertly preserved and maintained. Almost any building you see has some historical or architectural significance. Some buildings built by Quakers have been maintained with their original charm in tact. A number of historical buildings are open to visitors.

The Saffron West Museum is a great place to begin your journey back in history. The building is located on the same grounds as an old castle ruins. The ruins themselves are a wonder to behold, and then when you enter the museum itself, you see wonderful artifacts. The kids will definitely enjoy seeing things like mummy cases.

If you want to examine a fine stately house, you must visit Audley End House. It has over 30 rooms which have been stunningly decorated. Once you have taken in the beauty inside the home, then you should explore the beautifully maintained gardens and parks outside. Then, be sure to take a short tour of the amazing woodlands by way of the Audley End Miniature Railway. It will provide a memorable day for your whole family.

If you can appreciate beautifully maintained gardens, Bridge Ends Gardens is a must visit sight. You can observe a garden as it would have been maintained in the 1830s. Since there is no charge to explore the gardens, this can be an economical and historical visit for the family.

If you want to be truly inspired by an amazing piece of architecture, visit St. Mary the Virgin Church. Built in 1430, it is an excellent example of lavish architecture with historical importance. Its beauty is simply beyond words

For the true history enthusiast, a visit to Ashdon Village Museum must be on your list of things to do. You can observe village life as it has been throughout history. There are also many interesting shops, and crafts to keep your interest.
