The British Museum: Browse Through History in an Afternoon

Saturday, April 10th, 2010 | Travel and Leisure

If you’re looking for a cultural holiday, London is the perfect place. While in London you’d expect to get the English experience, but it’s such a culturally diverse place that you’ll learn about the rest of the world as well. This is especially true at the British Museum, where you can learn all about human history and practically go globe-trotting all under one very spectacular roof.

The British Museum holds a myriad of exhibits, allowing you to explore civilizations from around the world. You can view a history of the world from almost the beginning of time through the museum’s collection of seven million objects and artefacts. Some interesting artefacts include sculptures from the Kingdom of Ife in West Africa and works by great artists like da Vinci, Botticelli, Michelangelo and Titian. Have a look at the Treasures from Medieval York exhibition for some insight into England ‘other capital’ – York. If you’re an Egyptian enthusiast, be sure to check out the extensive ancient Egypt collection. It is quite possibly the next best thing to actually being in Egypt and seeing the Sphinx!

If you don’t fancy braving England’s cold weather and leaving the comfort of the indoors, then do some cultural exploration online. Web sites like Heritage Key offer a multitude of amazing virtual representations of ancient worlds and cultures. Especially worth noting on this site is the King Tut virtual experience, which takes you on an online discovery of King Tutankhamen’s tomb in a simulated Valley of the Kings. You can act just like a true Egyptian explorer by creating your own avatar and explore the sites of ancient Egypt. Also be sure to check out the ‘eighth wonder of the world’ the Terracotta Warriors. You can even communicate in real-time with other users who are exploring ancient Egypt as well.

Either was you choose to explore the ancient world and human history, you’re sure to learn a lot – and probably massively enjoy it too.
