An Introduction To The HCG Diet
Tuesday, February 21st, 2012 | Women's Interest
The HCG diet uses a diet drops to help a dieter burn fat calories instead of food calories, with the goal being very rapid weight loss. In concert with the HCG diet drops, the dieter maintains a 500-calorie per day diet, forcing the body to burn fat instead of food calories.
The actual value of the HCG diet drops has been contested, and the FDA has begun to limit sales by shutting down suppliers that were making excessive claims about the diet drops’ effect. However, remaining suppliers point to the fact that regulators targeted the vendors who exaggerated the effects of the diet, and not the HCG diet itself.
The Very Low Calorie diet was developed by Dr. Simeon, the creator of the HCG diet drops. Designed to put the body into starvation mode, the Very Low Calorie diet plan forces the body to burn stored fat because food calories are not available. HCG diet materials stress the importance of sticking to this diet. Food is consumed only to ease the dieter’s urges, not as the primary source of sustenance.
During breakfast, the diet plan recommends tea or coffee with one tablespoonful of milk. This is all the milk that is allowed during a 24-hour period. Sweeteners, especially artificial sweeteners like saccharine or herbs like stevia, may be added to the coffee or tea.
For lunch, the dieter may have 100 raw grams of very lean protein. Chicken breast, veal, very lean beef, whitefish, shrimp, and lobster are all recommended sources of this protein. The diet is very specific about cutting away all fat from the meat portion before cooking and about not adding additional fats during the cooking process. Frying the meat in oil, even healthy oils, is not allowed. The meat must be prepared by grilling or boiling. Lunch can also include fruit – such as an apple, half a grapefruit, or a handful of strawberries – and one kind of vegetable.
The vegetables recommended by the diet include asparagus, onion, chicory, red radishes, cucumber, chard, green salad, beet greens, spinach, tomato, cabbage, fennel and celery. Dinner also consists of one vegetable, one fruit, and 100 raw grams of very lean protein.
It may seem that a diet this restrictive would afford few options for flavor, but HCG dieters have begun to create and share recipes, many of which are available online. The diet drops, which can be ordered from a supplier, come in a kit that also includes a detailed explanation of the Very Low Calorie diet plan.
Of course, weight loss is an issue of health, not only cosmetic results, and so it is wise to consult a doctor before beginning any aggressive dieting regimen, including the HCG diet. A doctor’s guidance can help to ensure that the outcome of an extreme diet is what the dieter wants and needs, while also protecting vital aspects of health.
